Where are all the Bronze CGC 9.8's? Part 2 of 3 by Bruce Coller

Welcome back for installment 2 of this 3-part article. For those of you that missed “installment 1” and are interested in catching up… click here. Shortly after the first installment was sent out via the GPA Newsletter last month, I posted a thread (about the article) in the Bronze Section of the CGC Forum that sparked some very interesting discussions and debate. Please visit this thread… GPA Article: "Where are These Bronze 9.8's" Part 1 of 3. I think you’ll find it worth the time spent.

During the thread several posters brought to my attention a few books that I overlooked. Hopefully, I won’t neglect any other worthy bronze keys in this installment. Here’s the short list of the “forgotten”…

Avengers 93… (0) 9.8’s, 94… (1) 9.8, 95… (0) 9.8’s, Classic Adams Issues.
Gunhawks 1… (0) 9.8’s, Obscure Marvel Western

Thanks to forum member Namisgr for the heads up on the above 4 issues.

House of Secrets 92… (0) 9.8’s and (6) 9.6’s

Thanks to forum member Timulty for the heads up. This was actually on my preliminary list, but was lost in the process.

In this installment we’ll be covering the “middle third” of the alphabet covering titles encompassing (J through Q). Here we go with Part 2 (HINT: Dealers Pay Attention)…

No 9.8’s… or Just 1 Existing Copy:

  • John Carter 18…(1) and only (1) 9.6 as well. First Miller Art at Marvel
  • Jungle Action 1… (0)
  • Kazar 1 (’70)… (1)
  • Legion of Super-Heroes 1… (1)
  • Marvel Chillers 1… (1), 3… (0) Tigra
  • Marvel Double Feature 1… (1)

  • Marvel Spotlight v1 5… (0) First Ghost Rider, 7… (0)
  • Marvel Super-Heroes 18… (0) and (5) 9.6’s. First Guardians of the Galaxy. Technically a SA book from 1969, but I give this book the nudge towards Bronze anyway.
  • Marvel Triple-Action 1… (1)
  • Master of Kung Fu Annual 1… (0) and (0) 9.6’s! MOKF’s only Comic Team Up with Iron Fist.
  • Night Rider 1… (0) and (3) 9.6’s, 2-6… (0) Reprints of Original Ghost-Rider renamed
  • Omega, the Unknown 1… (1)
  • Power-Man 17… (0) Title changes from Hero for Hire

In Far Lower Supply than Demand:

  • Jonah Hex 1… (5). I only ever heard of 1 copy surfacing and never had one cross my path.

  • Kazar 1 (’74)… (4)
  • Man-Bat 1… (2)
  • Marvel Feature v1 1… (2), 11… (3), 12… (1)
  • Marvel Feature v1 11… (3) First Solo Thing
  • Marvel Presents 1… (1)
  • Marvel Spotlight v1 1… (3), 6… (3), 8… (3), 9… (1)

  • Marvel Team-Up 53… (1) First Byrne X-Men
  • Marvel Team-Up Annual 1… (2) X-Men

  • Ms. Marvel 1… (5)
  • Power-Man 57… (3) X-Men Cross-Over
  • Power-Man & Iron Fist 66… (3) 2nd Sabretooth

Probably Under Dealer Radar -OR- Likely Not Worth the Risk/Reward to Grade Regardless of Potential:

  • Karate Kid 1… (1)
  • Logans Run 6… (3) First Solo Thanos Story
  • Marvel Adventures 1… (0) Yes, obscure Reprint Titles are still collectible to the Bronze-Age fan.
  • Marvel Team-Up 8… (1) Early Cat
  • Nova 2-9… (0). 10… (1)
  • Omega, the Unknown 2-4… (0). 5… (1), 6… (3), 7… (2), 8-10… (0)

If any of you “fortunate” collectors or dealers have recently produced any 9.8 on the lists above (that are not yet on the census)… PLEASE contact me through the CGC forum PM system (Bronzebruce13). I’d be happy to make a serious offer if given the opportunity… and would like to keep this list updated. If you already own ANY of the above 9.8’s and are thinking of selling (or want to see what I have to trade), please contact me any time!

See you next month for the final installment – Bruce
