Detective #27, highest-graded copy anchors Comics and Comic Art at Heritage Auctions
by Heritage Galleries

Previous record price for a comic book expected to fall; Deep auction features most every Golden Age key comic, Feb. 25-27

DALLAS, TX – While a truly exceptional CGC-Certified 8.0 copy of Detective Comics #27, the very first appearance of Batman, is readying for its potentially world record-breaking hobby debut (pre-auction estimate is $300,000+) in Heritage Auction Galleries' Feb. 25-27 Signature® Comics & Comic Art Auction, the surrounding field of choice comics  and original comic art shines equally as bright in its own right.

"Almost all of the most sought-after comics from the Golden Age are in this catalog," said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. "Superman #1, Batman #1, two copies of Detective #27, two copies of Captain America Comics #1 and three copies of Marvel Comics #1, and that just scratches the surface."

The Marvel Comics #1 Pay Copy (Timely, 1939) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages, is one of the most famous single comics in the hobby; it may be tied with one other at the top of CGC's census, yet it is equaled by none in terms of significance, and in any other comics auction this would be the anchor lot. It is estimated at $200,000+.

"You'll find this copy in the Guinness Book of World Records thanks to a 2001 private treaty sale that was reported at $350,000," said Jaster. "While it's rumored that other books might have been included in that private treaty, the very strong demand for this special copy is underlined by its sale in a 2006 Heritage auction for $201,250 and the subsequent 2007 sale when it was purchased by the present owner for $205,000. These are the second and third-highest auction prices for a comic book at Heritage to date. "

While the spotlight will be on these rarities from the 1930s and 1940s, another marquee comic in the sale hails from 1960, a Near-Mint CGC Certified copy of Green Lantern #1 (DC, 1960).

"Green Lantern #1 is not a rare comic as such, but it's almost impossible to find in pristine condition," said Jaster. "We have the only copy that's ever been certified Near Mint to date. We're expecting it to sell for a price well into five figures. Like the Detective #27 and the Marvel Comics Pay Copy, it's being auctioned without reserve and with no minimum bid."

Many of the high-end comics in this auction come to Heritage courtesy of The Pinnacle Hill Collection, a recently uncovered comics trove that has the hobby buzzing about the abundance of high quality important early titles in this epic grouping.

Original comic illustration art is always and important facet of Heritage Signature® Comic and Comic Art Auctions, and the Feb. 25-27 event continues to show why Heritage is the dominant player in the original art market. Chief among original art offerings are several Peanuts strips featuring iconic themes, among them a Charles Schulz Peanuts Snoopy vs. the Red Baron Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-31-66 (United Feature Syndicate, 1966), estimated at $50,000+.

Another strip favorite for many decades was Prince Valiant, whose meticulously illustrated adventures appeared each Sunday. Hal Foster, regarded as the father of illustrational action-adventure cartooning, drew the strip for its first 35 years, and several examples of his work are in the auction including this striking 1956 Sunday strip. Several other examples by Foster and his successor John Cullen Murphy are offered in the auction, as is the original art for the one and only Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip, #1762, dated 11-15-70 (King Features Syndicate, 1970) done by legendary Mad artist Wally Wood

The greatest comic book artists of the 20th century are also well-represented, including a wide selection of the work of perhaps the best-known comic artist, Jack Kirby. The highlight piece is this original Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta cover art for Thor #132, Thor vs. the Colonizers of Rigel (Marvel, 1966).

"Very few original Marvel covers from this period have survived," said Jaster, "and they're treasured by collectors because they're drawn in a larger format than the art of the 1970s and later."

While the Marvel Comics fan usually named Kirby as his favorites, any readers whose allegiance was to DC couldn't help but be a Joe Kubert fan. Kubert, still active after a stunning 70 years as a professional artist, consigned a selection of works from his personal archives.

Like many comic artists, Kubert is Jewish, and he didn't shy away from taking on the wrenching topic of the Warsaw Ghetto on this art for Unknown Soldier #247.

Kubert is not only a favorite of fans, he's also idolized by his fellow artists," said Jaster, "and we're thrilled to be selling artwork of his that hasn't been offered for public sale before."

Hugh Hefner's Funnies: Over 55 Years of PLAYBOY Cartoons – more than 100 originals in Heritage Auctions Comic and Comic Art
by Heritage Galleries

Rare Hugh Hefner drawn PLAYBOY cartoon readies for public auction at Heritage in Dallas, Feb. 26

DALLAS, TX – Fans of the gorgeous imagery, saucy situations and irreverent humor of PLAYBOY Magazine will get a rare chance to acquire some of that original art – with names like Vargas, Neiman, Kurtzman and more - on Feb. 26 when Heritage Auction Galleries presents Hugh Hefner's Funnies: Over 55 Years of PLAYBOY Cartoons as part of its Feb. 25-27 Signature® Comics and Comic Art Auction, conducted live and online (HA.com).

"Every single one of the greatest names in the 55 year history of cartooning at PLAYBOY is represented by choice examples," said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. "Alberto Vargas, Leroy Neiman, Edward Gorey, Shel Silverstein, Jack Cole, Erich Sokol, Jack Davis, Eldon Dedini, and Arnold Roth, to name only a few."

Among the most interesting offers among the luminous illustration names represented in the collection is a rare cartoon offering from Hugh Hefner himself. PLAYBOY cartoon illustration, page 31, January 1954 (estimate $1,500-$2,000) hails from the very early days of the magazine when Hef – once an aspiring cartoonist himself – drew many of the cartoons himself.

Soon after this Hef comic was drawn, however, PLAYBOY became a refuge not only for those artists who wanted the freedom to offer edgy social commentary, but also for readers who needed an escape from the buttoned-up, black and white world of "Father Knows Best." Not only did the magazine become the groundbreaking repository of erotic imagery, it also gave voice to some of the nation's most brilliant, and devious, cartoon geniuses.

"As the curator of this marvelous collection, these funnymen have kept me laughing," writes Aaron Baker, Curator of the PLAYBOY Collection, in the catalog introduction. "More importantly, though, they have shown me that over the last half-century, these artists, along with many others, ushered America through a period of incredible social change."

Among the important offerings at the Heritage Auctions event on Feb. 26 are a trio of superb pin-ups from Alberto Vargas, the most famous artist to ever work for the magazine. The three watercolors –Vargas Girl, Playboy illustration, October 1963Vargas Girl, Playboy illustration, December 1963, andVargas Girl, Playboy illustration, February 1964 – are estimated at $30,000-$50,000 apiece, and represent some of the artists' very best pin-up work at the height of his powers.

One of the most important names to join PLAYBOY was original Mad Magazine editor Harvey Kurtzman, who dedicated two decades of his life to the epic erotic story of Little Annie Fanny. This auction will give die-hard aficionados a chance to own an Annie Fannie story from the peak period of the saga in the late 1960s. The Masters Testers Institute, complete 4-page Little Annie Fanny story, Playboy feature, January 1968 features the work of Kurtzman, along with Will Elder and Jack Davis, and carries a pre-auction estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

A handful of the best LeRoy Neiman "Femlins" ever to appear on the market makes up an important section of the PLAYBOY cartoon art at the Heritage auction, includingFemlin Hanging a Christmas Stocking, PLAYBOY illustration, group of 2, page 174, December 1970, a pair of the artists iconic nymphs direct from one of the greatest periods of the long PLAYBOY enterprise. It carries an estimate of $6000-$9000. Also featured is one of the greatest and most infamous cartoons by macabre master Gahan Wilson, Playboy cartoon illustration, page 179, April 1971, featuring an unsuspecting patient and murderous eye doctor. Estimate: $2000-$3000.

"Given Playboy's commitment from the outset to showcasing the greatest artists in the industry," said Jaster, "this special auction represents nothing less than a star-studded tour through the 20th century's cartoon highlights."

Heritage Auctions, headed by Steve Ivy, Jim Halperin and Greg Rohan, is the world's third largest auction house, with annual sales more than $600 million, and 475,000+ registered online bidder members.   Ultra High Grade Silver Age Marvels and DC's are Gold in Pedigree Comics' January Grand Auction
by Pedigree Comics

Doug Schmell, CEO and President of Pedigree Comics, Inc., reports that his company's January Grand Auction, which lasted for ten (10) and ended on Thursday, January 28th, was a phenomenal success. It was the second highest in total sales (over $850,000) of Pedigree's live, internet auctions, surpassed only by the one from August, 2009 (over $1,000,000). The highlights of the auction were the record-breaking sales of ultra high grade (CGC certified 9.4 and higher) of Silver Age Marvel and DC comic books, many from original owner and pedigreed collections. Although Pedigree Comics is mostly known for its incredible selection (both on its Web site regular inventory and the quarterly Grand Auctions) of high-end 1960's Marvels, this latest auction was perhaps the very best one ever for early Silver Age DC's. Fueled by nice runs of Pacific Coast Aquamans, Atoms and Metal Men, plus a fabulous group of books from the recently discovered Mound City Collection, early 1960's DC's were well represented and sold for record prices. Pedigree Comics is now beginning to accept consignments for their next auction, in April, 2010, which will have hundreds of new Silver Age and Bronze Age Marvels and DC's, including a killer run of early 1960's Batmans from the Pacific Coast Collection, early 9.4 and 9.6 Green Lanterns plus some more brand new choice high grade Silver Age Marvels keys. Do yourself a favor and go through your CGC graded books now in order to get first billing for the upcoming auction. Pedigree aggressively markets and advertises their auctions so the sooner your consignments are included, the more publicity and attention they will receive. In addition, the higher the value of your book(s) that sell in the auction the more $$ you take home under Pedigree's Climbing Scale. Pedigree consistently sets new sales records for Silver and Bronze Age comics in each Grand Auction as well as on its Web site, including the recent, record-setting sale of a Tales to Astonish #27 in CGC graded 9.4 for $75,000 in January. Why settle for less by consigning with someone else?

Prospective consignors can also upload their own scans, item information, descriptions and reserve amounts for the Grand Auction by utilizing the Automated Consignment System. It is actually very easy and fun to do. Just register onto the site, click "Customer Page" under "Your Account" and then click "Consignments" (under "Auctions"). You will then be able to enter the Pedigree Comics Consignment Management System and upload your own CGC certified books and magazines. Pedigree Comics will receive an email automatically once you have uploaded the information and they will then review the information imparted for accuracy. The item(s) will then be added to the April Grand Auction to be bid on. You will be amazed how simple it is to utilize the Automated Consignment System.

Classics Inc. guaranteed turn time for pressing has been extended!
by Classics Incorporated

Hi everyone, we're currently offering a guaranteed turnaround of 20 business days for all pressing orders received by 2/15, but we've decided to extend that offer to the end of the month, 2/28! So there's now less than 4 weeks left to get your books submitted. To back up this promise, if we fail to ship your books by the end of the 20th business day, we will discount your pressing fees by 20%.

The clock starts on the date your invoice is generated, which is typically done within 1-2 business days of us receiving your proscreen approval. Proscreens are currently running about 5 business days (exclusive of the 20 day turnaround). If you're using our exPress service, the guaranteed turn time will be 7 business days, as opposed to the usual 10 days. Please be aware that we cannot ship your order until full payment has been received. Any orders not fully paid by the 20th business day will have to be held until payment is received, and no discount will be applied.

This guarantee does not apply to books that are receiving restoration removal or any other service in conjunction with pressing. Also, any changes you make to your order after approval can result in delays that must be added to the 20 day guaranteed turnaround.

Matt Nelson will be attending several shows this year for on-site proscreens and submissions, including Wizard World Toronto in March, the new Chicago show in April, Wizard World Philly, San Diego, Wizard World Chicago, and New York at the end of the year. News updates will be released concerning booth location and dates as each show approaches.

See you in 2010!

'The Dark' and 'Freeman of the Armed Services' hit the shelves in March
by AAM/Markosia

March will see the introduction of two new OGN's (Original Graphic Novels) from publisher AAM/Markosia, following hot on the heels of recent successes 'From the Pages of Bram Stoker's Dracula: Harker', 'Serpent Wars' and 'Kong: King of Skull Island'.

'The Dark', written and created by Chris Lynch with art by Rick Lundeen, is a super-hero sci-fi thriller that challenges the reader's very perceptions of reality versus fiction. It is the story of Daniel Abbot, a brilliant young scientist on the fringes of the establishment and the creator of Memetech - a technology that encodes information and memories into a liquid form, allowing anyone to literally "drink" the encoded knowledge. Terrified that his invention will be used for military purposes he decides to destroy his research, but not before he takes one last trip ... with disastrous results. Two years on and the genie is out of the bottle. Abbot, having perfected his own version of the technology, fights a one-man war against the spread of his own invention and the collapse of our information culture in the guise of 'The Dark'.

"We've hidden lots of coded messages throughout the book," explains Lynch, "Both in the dialogue and in the artwork. From the symbol on The Dark's chest to adverts in the background, everything is there for a reason. Hopefully people will get a kick out of trying to solve the mystery, or at least from looking back after they've read the book for the first time to find all the clues they missed. Either way, we wanted to create something with enough depth to bring people back to re-read the story time and again."

Also shipping in the same month is 'Freeman of the Armed Services', written and drawn by industry veteran Huw-J. Freeman is a true archetypal British hero of old, a cross between James Bond, Doc Savage and Captain Britain without the spandex! Action and adventure throughout as our hero takes us back to the good old days where the spirit of adventure and good old-fashioned action reigned supreme. You join Captain Freeman in his search of a mysterious Viking treasure in the frozen north and battling an evil Chinese drug lord alongside Irish gangs in prohibitionist era New York, in a non-stop action-packed adventure akin to the old Saturday morning pulp shows.

"When I decided to take the successful 'Garth' strip down from the Daily Mirror website it was with both sadness and excitement," explains Huw-J. Re-branding the character as "Freeman" was easy as I wanted the character to be 'a homage' to all the creators who went before me, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!"

The Diamond order codes for both books are:
