$1-million-plus Batman comic sold through Heritage Galleries! by Heritage Galleries
Record sale tops the "Nicolas Cage" auction of 2002 DALLAS, TX – The world paid rapt attention to Heritage Auctions, and to the soaring market for fine comic books and choice original art, in the last two weeks of February as the company staged back-to-back record setting auctions – Signature® Illustration Art on Feb. 18 ($4.5 million+) andSignature® Vintage Comics and Comic Art on Feb. 25 ($5.6 million). This biggest story to come out of the two auctions, and perhaps any auction in the nation so far this year, was the $1,075,500 total price (including Buyer's Premium) paid for an exceedingly rare high grade CGC-certified 8.0 copy of Detective #27, the first appearance of "The Batman," which became the single most valuable comic book on the planet at 2:26 p.m. CT on Thursday, Feb. 25. "We knew a couple months ago that this Detective #27 was a good candidate to break the previous auction record for a comic book of $317,000," said Lon Allen, Director of the Comics Department at Heritage, "and then around the time of the auction we suspected it could go as high as $800,000. The fact that it then topped seven figures, and nosed out Superman for the world record price was simply amazing to us all. I've never been in an auction room with such excitement." The stunning price of $1,075,500 for a single comic book wasn't the only record set in Heritage Auctions' Signature® Vintage Comics and Comics Art Auction. The $5.6 million total for the event broke the Guinness World Record of $5,207,430.65 set by the same firm in October 2002 for the auction that included the famed collection of actor Nicolas Cage. "What we're seeing now with vintage comic books and original comic art," said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage Auctions, "is nothing less than the full maturation of the category into a widely respected and recognized category for serious collectors from across the planet." While Detective #27 dominated the news cycle around the world for three straight days, making headlines and front pages from Asia to South America, the auction saw several other records fall in the process, including the astounding $179,250 price paid for Alberto Vargas' truly stunningVargas Girl, Playboy Illustration, October 1963, from The Playboy Collection. "This is a great record on a number of levels," said Jaster. "Not only is it the highest price ever paid for an original Vargas, it also represents the most ever paid for an original piece of Playboy art. Looking at this piece it's obvious that it's one of Vargas' best works and well deserving of such an exalted price." A famous comic that would have been the uncontested highlight of almost any other auction, the Marvel Comics #1 Pay Copy (Timely, 1939), CGC-certified 9.0, sold for $227,050, making it the third-most expensive comic ever sold at Heritage. "We believe this to be one of the top ten auction prices ever paid for a comic in any venue," Jaster noted. Original Charles Schulz artwork has now cracked six figures for the third time in a Heritage auction as a Charles Schulz Peanuts Snoopy vs. The Red Baron Sunday Comic Strip Original Art from July 31, 1966 barnstormed its way to a $101,575 total. Another sign of how much elite comics have appreciated is Green Lantern #1 (DC, 1960) CGC NM 9.4 from 1960. Heritage previously auctioned this copy in 2003 for $18,975, a smashing price as the time that was quadruple the book value. But just seven years later it realized $50,787.50. The original art section had many pleasant surprises, perhaps none more so than the Wally Wood Daredevil #7 page 7 Original Art (Marvel, 1965) that realized $35,580. "Up to now the only Marvel artists of that era to fetch that kind of price for a panel page were the two greats Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko," Jaster said. Heritage Auctions, headed by Steve Ivy, Jim Halperin and Greg Rohan, is the world's third largest auction house, with annual sales more than $600 million, and 500,000+ registered online bidder members. Finest Example of Flash Comics #1 Sold for $450,000 by Heritage Galleries Six-Figure Profit for Seller Through New Heritage Service (Dallas, Texas) -- A pristine condition copy of Flash Comics #1 sold privately for $450,000 on March 12, 2010 through an efficient new service designed to unite successful bidders from earlier auctions with eager new buyers, according to Heritage Auctions of Dallas, Texas. The seller had originally obtained it for $273,125 in a January 2006 Heritage auction, and the buyer initiated this latest purchase directly through the new "Make Offer to Owner" (MOtO) feature available in Heritage's Permanent Auction Archive at HA.com. "This is the finest known copy of the 1940 DC Comics first appearance of the Flash and Hawkman," said Ed Jaster, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. "It's graded by CGC as Near Mint Plus 9.6, and it was part of the famous Edgar Church 'Mile High' Collection, universally considered the finest comic book collection of all-time." Names of the buyer and seller were not released. "The offer to purchase Flash #1 reached Heritage through MOtO, a new feature still in Beta test mode on our web site," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. "Any Heritage member who sees an auction lot from a past Heritage auction can anonymously offer the owner a profit through the MOtO feature," said Rohan. "Owners can set a fixed price minimum, or opt out completely from receiving offers. In this case, the owner couldn't resist this very fair offer for a six-figure profit after four years. He plans to use the money to purchase other items for his comic book collection." "Since this is, by far, the finest known copy of Flash #1, one of the 10 most valuable comic book issues, the buyer recognized this as a unique opportunity," said Jaster. "We created MoTO with this sort of unique item in mind. We'd often hear from collectors who are new to the hobby or are expanding into another area of collectibles and were frustrated because items they'd like to own were previously sold years earlier. With this new service, many of those top items may be available now as long as the buyer is willing to pay a fair price." The Make Offer to Owner feature also is available for other Heritage auction areas, such as coins, stamps, sports memorabilia, natural history, jewelry and art. Heritage holds the record for selling the world's most valuable comic book, $1,075,500 for Detective Comics #27 with the first appearance of Batman, in the recent $5.6 million February 2010 auction, which broke Heritage's own Guinness World's Record for the all-time most valuable comic book auction. Heritage Auctions, headed by Steve Ivy, Jim Halperin and Greg Rohan, is the world's third largest auction house, with annual sales more than $600 million, and 500,000+ registered online bidder members. For more information about Heritage Auctions, and to join and gain access to a complete record of prices realized, along with full-color, enlargeable photos of each lot, please visit HA.com. Fantastic Four #1 in 9.4 Highlights Silver Age Marvels in Pedigree Comics’ April Grand Auction! by Pedigree Comics According to Doug Schmell, CEO and President of Pedigree Comics, Inc., his company will be offering an incredible group of Silver Age Marvels in their upcoming Grand Auction, scheduled to begin on Sunday night, April 18th at 8:00 p.m. The auction will last for 10 days until the evening of Sunday, April 28th and will feature a few hundred choice high grade and ultra high grade Silver and Bronze Age Marvels and DC's. The highlight of the auction is the second best known copy of Fantastic Four #1, a CGC graded 9.4 with white pages. It is one of only 4 certified 9.4 copies in the world, trailing only one in 9.6, and represents only the second time a certified Near-Mint example has been publicly offered for sale. The last sale of an FF #1 in 9.4 was almost 8 years ago, back in June, 2002! Featuring the origin and first appearance of the Fantastic Four, the book represents the second most valuable Silver Age comic , trailing only Amazing Fantasy #15 (origin and first appearance of Spider-Man). It is also extremely rare to find in the higher grades, with only 1 in 9.6, 4 in 9.4, 2 in 9.2 and 1 in 9.0, easily making it one of the toughest early Silver Age Marvel keys to find in VF/NM or better (comparatively, there is 1 Amazing Fantasy #15 in 9.6, plus 6 in 9.4, 2 in 9.2 and 5 in 9.0). It is widely considered one of the most important comic books of all time as it ushered in what is now called the "Marvel Age of Comics" and spearheaded Marvels launch to greatness. Cover-dated November, 1961, it was on the newsstands in early August, 1961 and is rapidly approaching its 50thanniversary. Schmell estimates the book will sell for over $250,000 and establish a new record for a Silver Age comic book. Other Silver Age keys include the Pacific Coast copy of Daredevil #1, a gorgeous 9.4 with off-white to white pages (the second highest CGC ranked copy behind only 4 in 9.6); a Fantastic Four #1 in 8.5 with off-white to white pages; a killer copy of Fantastic Four #5 in 9.4; a Journey Into Mystery #83 in 9.0 (oww) and a gorgeous Justice League of America #1 in 9.4, the second best existing copy behind only one in 9.6. Many other great books will be available to bid on and buy in the auction, including a high grade group of early 1960's Batmans, including a killer run from the Pacific Coast Collection. The Batmans start at issue #129 and the Pacific Coast run consists of 17 issues between #152 and #171, most in 9.4 and 9.6 CGC certified condition. Almost every Batman in this group is the highest graded CGC copy. There will also be a fabulous group of early 9.2 -9.6 Green Lanterns in the Grand Auction (11 issues between #3 and #19), including a bunch from the Pacific Coast Collection (5 issues between #14 and #19). Every copy, save for two, is the top certified one according to the CGC census. Wonder Woman fans will love the killer group of 9.4-9.8 Silver Age issues (11 books in total), including a few from the Pacific Coast pedigree. For the Marvel collectors, there is an amazing run of Strange Tales with issues mostly from the Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD run of the title and includes 20 issues, all in 9.4 or higher with many in 9.6 and 9.8. Almost every book in the run is from a recognized pedigree or original owner collection including Boston, Mile High II, Pacific Coast, Rocky Mountain, Valparaiso and Western Penn. Most of the comics in the Strange Tales run have white pages with the rest at off-white to white. More choice Silver Age comics will be featured in the April Grand Auction as well as some high-end 1970's books. Here is a list of some of the early highlights:
Many more new books will be listed in the upcoming weeks so please check Scoop each week and the Pedigree Comics Web site every day (www.PedigreeComics.com) for all the latest news, announcements and updates about the auction. You can begin viewing the items in the Auction Preview beginning on Monday, March 1st. Pedigree Comics is continuing to accept consignments for the April Grand Auction. Do yourself a favor and go through your CGC graded books now in order to get early billing. Pedigree aggressively markets and advertises their auctions so the sooner your consignments are included, the more publicity and attention they will receive. In addition, the higher the value of your book(s) that sell in the auction the more $$ you take home under Pedigree's Climbing Scale. Pedigree consistently sets new sales records for Silver and Bronze Age comics in each Grand Auction as well as on its Web site. Why settle for less by consigning with someone else? Prospective consignors can also upload their own scans, item information, descriptions and reserve amounts for the Grand Auction by utilizing the Automated Consignment System. It is actually very easy and fun to do. Just register onto the site, click "Customer Page" under "Your Account" and then click "Consignments" (under "Auctions"). You will then be able to enter the Pedigree Comics Consignment Management System and upload your own CGC certified books and magazines. Pedigree Comics will receive an email automatically once you have uploaded the information and they will then review the information imparted for accuracy. The item(s) will then be added to the April Grand Auction to be bid on. You will be amazed how simple it is to utilize the Automated Consignment System. |
