Nearly all of the top comic books sold in Heritage Auctions’ September 10-13 Comics & Comic Art Auction, including the top 100 based on prices realized, each carried a CGC grade.

At the top of the list was Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages, which sparked fiercely competitive bidding and drawing 30 bids before finding a new home at $348,000. Unrestored copies are very difficult to come by for this major key; according to the September 2020 CGC census, this copy is one of just three carrying a grade of 4.5, with just 11 known with a higher grade. Reaching the newsstands barely a year after Superman’s first appearance in Action Comics #1, it is the first issue in which an entire comic was devoted to a single superhero. Superman #1 is currently ranked #3 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list.
