CGC-Graded Comics Expected to be Among Top Attractions in Heritage Auctions' Comics Auction

Nearly all of the top comic book lots in Heritage Auctions’ exceptional Comics & Comic Art Auction April 1-4 carry CGC grades.

Among the top choices in the four-day event is Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages. The issue is in such demand that a higher-graded (9.4) copy sold at Heritage Auctions in January 2021 for a record-breaking $2.22 million. The grades are not the same, but this historically significant issue is in demand in any grade; with the exception of the record-setter at the start of the year, Heritage Auctions has not offered a copy with a higher grade than this one in nearly two years … and it has been said that the copy offered in this sale looks better than its grade, in part because of its vibrant color.

The issue came out a year after Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27 and had the first appearances of both the Joker and the Cat (a.k.a. Catwoman).

The issue is widely recognized throughout the hobby: it currently is ranked No. 4 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list, thanks in part to its classic cover by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson.
